Scandals concerning the K-pop world usually revolve around young girls providing sexual favours in return for sponsors and auditions, but this article proves the sleaze works both ways, as a recent TV chat show revealed a rookie male idol group provided sexual services to female fans in Japan. I found this curious, stupidly imagining company suits herding a boy band into hotel rooms with starstruck 18 year olds. Could international fans really have as much power as the rich Korean men hiring out female idols, I wondered?
After some asking around I heard these fans are usually middle-aged women willing to sponsor rookies in return for sex. Apparently there’s a substantial amount of Japanese women who buy up merchandise, plus countless copies of the same CD, keeping a vigilant eye on new bands on the Korean scene. It’s not surprising news over here, and it’s a Japanese phenomenon only – there aren’t Korean ajummas willing to do the same for young Japanese men, it seems.
I wonder if there are such affluent female fan bases in America and Europe secretly funding the reality TV wannabes of the West?
